Adam' reading at the ceremony

We're really thankful to our dear friend, Adam Brandt, for speaking at our wedding ceremony. We met during our freshman year of college, and my life changed drastically because of him. He helped me take that jump from an angsty and confused teenager to a thoughtful and always-questioning adult. Here is his speech.

I met Natalie almost exactly nine years ago. It was the last week of September, our first week of college, and summer was winding down in the warm Santa Barbara sunshine. We gathered over the years a group of friends that seemed to share a simple idealism. Natalie shared this as trait as well, although not in a simple way. She created and learned and argued with idealism. (Boy did Natalie and I argue! But not in a bad way. I promise.) And by idealism I don’t mean anything overly dramatic. By idealism I simply mean the conviction that, first, the world can be a better place, and, second, that our actions can make it so. And as I have gotten to know Ben over the last three years, it is clear that he shares this conviction.

But we have gotten older and idealism isn’t found quite so easily anymore. It hides in nooks or silent places. It is overshadowed by a world that has gotten so much bigger. Bigger because we begin to understand what it means to be just one person out of billions. Or it becomes cramped by a world that can seem so much smaller than it once did. Smaller because the easy joy of the undiscovered, and the promise of tomorrow, fade as the undiscovered is gradually uncovered and tomorrows don’t seem as numerous as before.

People react differently to this process. (Do we call it getting older? Do we dare use the M-word? Are we all becoming, heaven forbid, mature?). Some try to make the best of what they see as a hard situation, or they seek joy in old ways that might not fit quite right anymore. Natalie and Ben are responding joyfully, wisely, and honestly. They are concentrating, with their limited time, on the things that are truly important. They are choosing as their project, as the target for their ambitions and idealism and hope, something that would have once seemed mundane (at least compared to some problems in the world), but now seems so large and important: turning love, a thing by turns consuming, or ecstatic, or sometimes fickle, into something secure, and warm, and lasting - a family. Though treated as less important here and now than in other places or in other times, family remains profound for exactly two reasons: it is the thing from which we all came, and thus ties us irrevocably, binds us and roots us to our past, and, in a world where we all have to go at some point, it is the only way in which we truly survive. It is the primary way in which we make solid our hope for a better world and the way that we pass along the very best of all the things that made us what we are.

For these reasons, among many others, there is no higher purpose, no project more worthy of Natalie and Ben’s idealism, than their marriage.

-Adam Brandt

What a Day!

We had the most magical time at our wedding. Thank you all for being a part of this very special occasion. Ben and I were overwhelmed with your love, support, and generous help on our big day, and all the festivities and prep that lead up to it.

I've created a Flickr group so we can all share photos from the day. Please check it out at http://flickr.com/groups/natalie_ben_wedding/ and add your own pictures.

The Gourmet Ghetto

Head north on Shattuck Avenue to Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto. This neighborhood is home to an incredible variety of high quality restaurants. Chez Panisse (1517 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley), the restaurant that popularized both California Cuisine and the local food movement, is the elder statesmen of the Gourmet Ghetto. Chez Panisse has both a fixed price restaurant that is open for dinner only (510-548-5525) and a more casual café that is open for lunch and dinner (510-548-5049). Reservations are a must!

There are many other great restaurants in this neighborhood, including:

Cesar, a tapas bar with a very a creative menu and excellent cocktails (1515 Shattuck Avenue, open daily noon to midnight. 510-883.-222)

The Cheeseboard Pizza Collective makes one kind of pizza a day, and it is always unique and always great. The Cheeseboard is open for lunch and dinner, but they do close for an afternoon siesta. (1512 Shattuck Avenue Berkeley. 510-549-3055) Carryout only and the lines can get long so plan appropriately.

Gregoire Restaurant serves carry-out high-end sandwiches and dinner entrées that are meticulously prepared using classical French cooking techniques and the finest natural and organic ingredients. The perfect spot if you want both fast and fine dining. Make sure to order the potato puffs--they are a little bit of heaven! (2109 Cedar Street. (1/2 block off Shattuck) (510) 883-1893)

Cha-ya is one of the most unique restaurants in this area, an intimate vegan Japanese restaurant that never disappoints. The restaurant is very small, so best for small groups. Worth the wait--make sure to order the mushroom miso soup. (1686 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley. (510) 981-1213)

If none of these peak your interest, just take a stroll down Shattuck between Virginia and Vine Streets and pick on of the other great restaurants in the neighborhood.

Fellini Restaurant

Fellini is a fun and funky Euro-style trattoria serving Italian country-style cuisine in a casually elegant setting. Open for dinner nightly from 5:30pm - 10:00pm, we serve California-meets-Napoli style thin-crust pizzas, inventive pasta dishes and unique salads. Catering to diverse and sophisticated Berkeley palates, we also offer a wide variety of intriguing vegetarian and vegan options, as well as seasonal seafood entrees.

Ben and I swing by this spot once every few weeks b/c we're addicted to their calamari and delicious pasta dishes. Excellent spot for brunch on the weekends (9:30am-1:30pm). Fellini's is located at 1401 University @ Acton, just a little ways away from the University Inn. They accept reservations for parties of 6 or more, just ring (510)841-5200.

4th St Shops, near University Inn

If you're staying at University Inn, you're only a few blocks away from some wonderful shops and restaurants. Once you exit the hotel, walk west on University Ave (towards freeway), and take a right onto 6th street. Walk 1 short block over to Hearst Ave, left on Hearst, and then go down 2 short blocks to 4th street. Most of the shopping will be to your right.

For breakfast, check out the classic Bette's Oceanview Diner on 1807A Fourth Street. California-style diner fare and a great breakfast, if you can get there before the crowds. Open 6:30am-4pm, Fri-Sun, and 6:30am-2pm on Mondays. There's also Manhattan Bagel (1789 Fourth St) and Peet's Coffee & Tea (1776 Fourth St) for a quick morning pick-me-up.

Just past Peet's there's an excellent Mexican restaurant called Tacubaya (1788 Fourth St) that serves both breakfast at lunch.

For the full list of shops and a bit of history, check out Fourth Street Shops.

Wine Tasting on a Warm Sunday Afternoon

Yesterday we spent a lovely day winding our way through Sonoma with our good friends Ben and Greg. Greg is the wine expert, so he and Ben put together a lovely itinerary for us. We didn't hit all of them as we ran out of time, but here are the memorable moments.

Russian Hill
4525 Slusser Rd
Windsor, CA 95492

Amazing Pinots, with a gorgeous view of the valley. See photos above and below. Don't be thrown off by the hideous, Dynasty-style house at the top of the hill when you first pull into the driveway. We expected big Dallas-style hair, but found a friendly staff and reds that were both well priced and tasty. Goes to show that it's worth pulling into random driveways in Sonoma in hopes of finding a hidden treasure.

Sunce Winery
1839 Olivet Road
Santa Rosa, CA 95401

Another bright gem with a nice patio and bocci ball court in back. They have an excellent array of wines, and a very charming staff. You can sit out back and they will serve you your flights via a small back window. We selected our white wine for the wedding reception here, a crisp Sauvignon Blanc that was a crowd pleaser in our group.

Ironhorse Winery
9786 Ross Station Road
Sebastopol, CA 95472

This used to be a hidden gem, but over the years word has gotten out about this winery so you will find some crowds and a $10 tasting fee (the previous two wineries do not charge). Their selection, however, is excellent, and worth the fee. If you like Champagne, then you must try their Blanc de Blanc, which was to die for. I have a weakness for champagne, so I enjoyed their sparkling wine flight especially. In general their wines are on the pricer side.

Other excellent sites to hit, but we sadly ran out of time...

All of these wineries are a mere 10 minutes from one another, so if you pace yourself you should be able to hit each of them easily. I'd advise packing a picnic lunch to enjoy during one of your tastings, as it will save you a lot of time. Most of the wineries close at 4pm.

Cocktails in SF

For those of you who enjoy a well-mixed cocktail, here are a few hidden gems in San Francisco to hit. First up is Bourbon & Branch, a new speak-easy near Civic Center that has a lot of charm and a cocktail menu several pages long. Located at 501 Jones Street, between Geary St & Ofarrell St, this is a spot you might want to walk to in a group or have a cab drop you off. It's best to make a reservation ahead of time, otherwise you might have to squeeze into the back library room (shown above). Their cocktail menu changes weekly, often featuring fresh produce from Farmer's market. The bartenders take their work seriously, and you won't regret paying a bit more for their excellent drinks.

If you're hoping to run into a movie star, your best bet is Otis, located in the very charming Maiden Lane near Union Square. Their exact address is 25 Maiden Lane, just across the way from the all the fancy shops in downtown. While the drinks are a bit pricier than Bourbon & Branch, you'll feel like a VIP. They also recently added a lunch menu, so it's a nice spot to get away to if you're planning a shopping trip downtown.

One other great cocktail stop is Millennium Restaurant, the famed vegan hotspot in the Tenderloin (580 Geary Street). If you can stay for dinner, you won't regret it, but if not, definitely stop in for a taste of their wonderful organic cocktails (and maybe dessert, too).

La Note for breakfast

A wonderful spot for brunch, La Note restaurant is located at 2377 Shattuck Ave, between Durant Ave and Channing Way in downtown Berkeley. You can't go wrong ordering the french toast with lavender honey, Lemon gingerbread pancakes, or any of the gorgeous omelets. Make sure to arrive early on the weekends to avoid the long lines, or call ahead if you have a party of six or more (510-843-1535). La Note is open Mon-Friday 8am-2:30pm, and on the weekends from 8am-3pm.

Kicking off the Wedding Season

The wedding season has kicked off with one of the best I've ever been blessed with--Vanessa & Doug Jerolmack, June 2nd, 2007. Performances by the happy couple, mariachis, a photobooth, and many tears of joy. Vanessa is one of my nearest and dearest, and we go way back to the days of San Miguel dorm @ UC Santa Barbara. I was so happy to act as a witness and bridesmaid on their special day, and I got to run around with a clipboard organizing the reception to boot! Great practice for our big day. Ben showed off his waitering skills by passing out delicious slices of chocolate, lemon, and vanilla cake with aqua frosting. We wish them the best.

Next up are our friends Kyle and Rivhka--can't wait to see what they do! Also, warm congrats to Kristi and Blair on their recent engagement. Watch out...wedding fever is catching.

Launching of Miss Natalie Linens

Although this has little to do with the wedding, I wanted to share some exciting news with you all. I'll be launching a new line of home goods and linens this Sunday at the San Francisco Capsule Design Festival. We'll be featuring hand-printed handkerchiefs and tea towels, along with other wonderful little treasures for your home. If you're in town, please swing by and say hello! Capsule takes place in the hip and stylish Hayes Valley neighborhood, and we'll be at booth #104 (Octavia/Linden) from 11am-6pm. Hope to see you there!

Finally!

We finally have the group code for the Hilton Garden Inn in Emeryville. The code is DAVRNK and you can book here. Enter the code under Special Accounts in the "Group/Convention Code" space. You can also book by phone by calling (510) 658-9300 and giving them the code!

Getting around town

The Bay Area has some of the best public transportation in the country, so it's easy to get around the East Bay and San Francisco without a car. We'll have shuttle service to/from our wedding location, and most of the hotels have easy access to buses. Here are some links to help you find your way about town on various modes of public transit:

BART
Subway system that connects San Francisco and the East Bay. Fares are based on distance, so prices for tickets vary depending on your entrance/exit stations. BART runs to/from the SFO airport and the Oakland airport. For the Oakland Airport, use the airBART service, which is a bus/subway combo. Use the BART Quickplanner to help figure out your route between stations. BART is the best way to get to downtown San Francisco from the East Bay.

AC Transit
Bus system for the East Bay. Important lines to know are #40 (up and down Telegraph Ave) and #51 (up and down University Ave).

MUNI
Bus and light rail system for San Francisco. The MUNI is extensive, and can get you pretty much anywhere in the city within 45 minutes. If you plan to spend a lot of time in San Francisco, I'd recommend getting a 3-day passport.

Cable Cars are part of MUNI, but a regular transfer from a bus won't work on the cable car. They charge $5/ride (1 way!). A 3-day passport will work on the cable cars; if you plan on spending lots of time in Chinatown, it'd be worth getting a passport.

*NOTE* If you are planning on switching from BART to MUNI, or vice versa, make sure to pick up a transfer coupon from your exiting station. These machines are near the exit turnstiles--just punch the round red button and use half the coupon on your next trip. Will save you a quarter.

Hotels

We finally have our hotels confirmed. We have rooms reserved at three different hotels for you to choose from. Here's the scoop:

First is the Berkeley Marina Doubletree. This is a great full service hotel with easy access to the main highways to Oakland, San Francisco and Marin. As the name suggests, it's located on the Berkeley Marina and has beautiful views of the city. Click on this link to book rooms. Our group code is #2664557 and will entitle you to a 10% discount off of the best available rate for your room. We recommend requesting rooms on the 2nd floor with water views! This hotel has limited access to public transportation, so we'd suggest renting a car if you plan to stay here.

Second is the University Inn - Berkeley. This is a nice hotel, located near downtown Berkeley. It is walking distance to 4th Street, home to great shops, but does not have a bar or restaurant on the premises. Our block of rooms here is for Friday Check-In to Monday Check-Out, but if you are planning to stay a longer or shorter amount of time they are very friendly and flexible. Our rate is $89 a night, and you can book by calling 510-849-1121. Make sure you tell them you are with the Davis-Runkle Wedding to get the rate. This hotel is very close to public transportation.

Finally, we have rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn - Bay Bridge in Emeryville. As the name implies, it is located near the Oakland end of the Bay Bridge and is also near the Emeryville shopping district. This is a full service hotel with a bar and restaurant on site, and has easy access to everything. Our block of rooms here is also from Friday to Monday, and the rate is $129 a night. We have not yet received the group code for this hotel, but we will update the blog as soon as we do. The group code for this hotel is DAVRNK. You can book online by putting the code in the "Group/ Convention Code" space under the Special Accounts heading. You can also book by phone by calling (510) 658-9300. We will also be posting information about good restaurants and things to do near these hotels. Happy Travels!

P.S. Once you book your hotel, please drop us a note letting us know where you'll be staying and your arrival date.

Registries, Part Deux

Just a quick update that we are now also registered at Macy's. We've closed our registry at Sears since their website proved less than secure and we kept adding pots and pans to someone else's list. A lot of fun could be had with this security loophole, but I just couldn't bring my hacker-self to inflect hideous china or bad linens on a fellow bride. So, now you can find our lists at Macy's, Crate and Barrel, and Tail of the Yak.

Wine Country: Sonoma

For those of you who enjoy a nice bottle of wine and the beautiful countryside, we recommend a day trip to the Larsen Family Winery in Sonoma. They're open everyday from 10am-5pm and are a kid-friendly, dog-friendly spot. Pack a picnic, grab the kids, and head up for a day. They have a bocci ball court, picnic tables with a grill, and a small petting zoo. Also, they're just minutes away from downtown Sonoma and a smattering of other great wineries, too.

P.S. The wine tasting fee is waived if you buy a bottle.

Sunday Night Out

For those of you looking at tickets now, here's a quick heads up. Our Party will take place in the early afternoon on Sunday, but that night we will be meeting up at a local watering hole for some catching up with old friends. So, if you'd like to hang out with us then (and we'd love to have you there), make sure to book your return flight for Monday.

Ici Ice Cream

Ici Ice Cream is another great local shop at 2948 College Ave, just north of Ashby in Rockridge. They craft homemade ice cream from local ingredients and offer an amazing assortment of flavors, from blood orange sherbert to ginger vanilla. They make their own cones on site, and have a wide array of cookies, ice cream sandwiches, and pastries for you to try. Their ice cream has a very homemade taste to it, not the typical overly sweet stuff you get in the grocery freezer. Definately kid-friendly spot to hit after dinner in Berkeley or Oakland.

Bonus: on top of having delicious ice cream, they also have a beautiful store with great signage and enticing displays. Intimate with an old fashioned flavor, but decidedly new and fresh, all at the same time. No surprise that one of the owners is a graphic designer.

Tail of the Yak

One of my favorite stores in the world is Tail of the Yak, located at 2632 Ashby Ave, just west of College Ave. It is a cabinet of curiosities, a living Neutral Milk Hotel song, and the place I go for inspiration. Driving by, you always see folks staring at their windows, wondering what is inside. Don't be intimidated by the buzzer to get; the women who run this store (30 yrs and counting) are quite friendly and helpful. They have a rotating collection of bizarro things collected from around the world--old glass barometers, fine crystal from Paris, vintage silk ribbon, crazy lady antique costume jewelry, gorgeous hand-bound notebooks from India and local letterpress shops, a stuffed emu, along with Mexican paper streamers, cards, linens, etc. There are too many things to name, really.

They're open from 11-5pm everyday except Monday. Ben and I are also registered here for those of you who get in town early, or our local guests who want to support a beautiful local business. Just ask one of costumed ladies behind the counter for the registry book. P.S. This is not a good place to bring small children.

Musee Mecanique

For a unique museum experience, visit the Musee Mecanique on Fisherman's Wharf in SF. It's the the world’s largest privately owned collections of mechanically operated musical instruments and antique arcade machines. For the cost of a quarter you can get your fortune told, play baseball, or test your strength. We visited last weekend with Randa and the kids and took some photos in their photo booth. Beware of the photobooth, though--it starts to take pictures before you can finish feeding it dollars ($3 total) and you end up sacrificing a pic.

Flying into the Bay Area

There are several different airports you can fly into for your trip out to Oakland. The most convenient is the Oakland International Airport (OAK), situated in San Leandro and about a 15-20 minute drive to downtown Berkeley, 10 minutes to Oakland. If you are not renting a car, check the AirBART schedule for information on getting from the OAK airport to any location on the BART line. AirBART costs $3 for the shuttle, plus the cost of your BART ticket (varies depending on the exit station).

San Francisco International (SFO) is your next best location, located south of the city. It's a 45 minute drive from SFO to Oakland (no traffic), and the BART also runs directly from the airport. San Jose International (SJC) is the third best bet, but a much farther drive. OAK is, by far, the easiest airport to get in and out of, along with being the closest to our hotels and wedding location. Southwest Airlines also has a hub there.

Tuesday, March 27, 2007

Registries

We are now officially registered at Crate & Barrel. We'll be updating these lists soon, so more selection to come, along with a few local stores for Bay Area friends to support.

Friday, March 16, 2007

Gelato Milano

For decadent homemade gelato in downtown Berekely, swing by Gelato Milano located at 2170 Shattuck (and Center), just a block down from the Berkeley BART stop. Open 7 days/week, Friday and Saturday noon-midnight, Sunday to Thursday noon-11pm. Their gelato is much better than the chain down the street (Gelato Naia) and their Donald Judd ambiance is much better for focusing on the fresh Italian artisanship in your cup. Advance warning: this gelato is not vegan.

Berkeley Repertory Theater

If you're interested in catching some live theater while you're in town, check out the Fall lineup at the Berkeley Repetory Theater, located at 2025 Addison Street (at Milvia St & Shattuck Ave) in downtown Berkeley. They always pick cutting-edge and smart plays, and the casting is stellar. Not to mention they're in a great spot smack in the middle of downtown Berkeley. BONUS: Folks under 30 can also get discount tickets.

You don't have to take my word for it. Check out the Rep's reviews at Yelp.

Crixa Cakes in Berkeley

For some wonderful sweet treats, try Crixa Cakes Bakery & Cafe, located on 2748 Adeline Street, Berkeley, CA 94703. It's right around the corner from the famous Berkeley Bowl (largest produce section in California). Crixa is a Hungarian Bakery that offers some of the most well-balanced, exquisite desserts on the West Coast. Cakes, pies, cookies, tarts, fruit folds-- you name it, they do it best. They also have a fine selection of well-crafted teas, so order a pot of the Queen Mary with your Chocolate Orange Mousse Cake (shown above). For reals, it's two layers of chocolate sponge cake soaked with fragrant orange liqueur and two layers of bittersweet chocolate mousse.

Crixa Cakes is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9 AM to 6 PM and Friday and Saturday from 9 AM to 7 PM.

Ewok Family Portrait

Photoshoot

Last weekend we hiked up to Tilden Park and had some amazing photos taken by our good friend (and best man) Paul Schiek, shown here styling Ben. Many thanks to Paul for his talent and amazing ability to keep shouting "Hawkeye! Hawkeye!" every 2 secs to get our pup to look at the camera. Also thanks to the lovely Mariah, assistant and location scout. Will post more photos of our fun day soon.

In the meantime, check out Paul's photo blog at http://www.holesandhalos.blogspot.com/

Restaurants: Burma SuperStar!

For the most unique food in all of SF, make sure to check out Burma SuperStar in the Richmond neighborhood of SF. Burmese food is a somwhere between Thai, Indian, and Heaven!! Everything is amazing, and the long lines out the door prove it. A few words to the wise:
  • Call Ahead!! They don't take reservations, but will put your name on the wait list if you call (415)387-2147. Make sure to leave your phone number b/c they will call you when your table is ready.
  • Keep your party to 4 or less for faster seating. Groups of 6 can take 2 hours, no joke, but worth the wait. Don't even try to go there with a bigger group.
  • Eat early! A great day plan is to spend the afternoon in Golden Gate park (nearby), and then head out to an early 6pm dinner there. The epic waits don't usually start until after 6:30pm.

Make sure to order:
  • both types of special rice (coconut and spiced)
  • Tea Leaf Salad: a real party in your mouth
  • Walnut Shrimp
  • Falafel/Samosa soup--midly spicy, wonderous mixture of flavors
  • Ginger Beer lemonade
